Published on June 17, 2025

The NHERI DesignSafe team is pleased to congratulate the winners of the 5th annual DesignSafe Dataset Awards, recognizing outstanding 2024 datasets published in the Data Depot. The winning authors provided unique, clear, and well-curated data with strong potential for re-use. We encourage everyone to view these outstanding examples of natural hazards scholarship:

Food Access Impact Survey for Harris County and Southeast Texas after Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Dataset PRJ-2769.

These data identify factors that affected the ability of suppliers to ensure access to food, with a focus on fresh food access. In this ongoing project, the 2024 dataset, “Food Access Restoration Model,” has been viewed 894 times and downloaded 74 times.

Winning authors: Nathanael Rosenheim (PI), Maria Watson, John Casellas Connors, Mastura Safayet, and Walter Gillis Peacock.

Virtual Damage Assessment and First-floor Elevation Estimation: Application to Fort Myers Beach, Florida and Hurricane Ian (2022). Dataset PRJ-5700.

This project provides a comprehensive collection of datasets for virtual damage assessment and first-floor elevation measurements of 3,408 building structures impacted by Hurricane Ian (2022) in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. The dataset has been viewed 482 times and downloaded 91 times.

Winning authors: Mehrshad Amini (PI), Daniel Cox, Andre Barbosa, and Sebastiao Appleton Figueira.

Dataset award winners will present their work in a DesignSafe webinar. In addition, the research will be featured in DesignSafe news articles broadcast to the NHERI community and the general public.
