Highlights from the 2024 NHERI Summer Institute

Another NHERI Summer Institute in the books!

This year, 29 early-career academics joined NHERI researchers for three days of information-packed sessions, hands-on practice developing NSF proposals, and valuable networking with peers and established researchers in natural hazards engineering. The event took place at UT San Antonio, June 12-14.

Since 2017, the NHERI education and community outreach team has hosted seven Summer Institutes. SI alums have gone on to publish 2,392 articles, land $39,762,402 in NSF grant awards, earn 7 CAREER Awards, and continue to advance as faculty in their respective fields.

At this year’s SI, NSF program director Joy Pauscke joined virtually to provide specific tips about proposal development. NSF program director Giovanna Biscontin attended the Institute in person to provide feedback on participant idea-papers and their collaborative group mock proposals. Representatives from each NHERI site were also present to meet with participants and share their expertise. Finally, three education consultants provided guidance and insight on how researchers might weave educators and K-12 students into the broader impacts of their proposals.
