Research Symposium Caps Off the 2024 NHERI REU Summer

Published on August 22, 2024

On August 8 and 9, thirty NHERI REU students from around the country gathered at the University of California San Diego to take part in the REU Research Symposium. This exciting, culminating event gave them valuable first-time experience presenting their research in a professional setting, sharing their work in a poster session, and networking with peers and faculty.

This year, the group also took in an outdoor art exhibit on the UC San Diego campus, toured the NHERI at UC San Diego shake table, and wound up at the beach for a bonfire.

The meeting was a huge success, said Robin Nelson, NHERI Education and Community Outreach specialist and Symposium co-organizer. “The student presentations were outstanding this year, and we were pleased to have so many people join the Symposium via Zoom,” she added.

NHERI REU student papers, presentations and posters will be available in the NHERI DesignSafe Data Depot.

Every summer, the NHERI REU Summer Program provides opportunities for undergraduates to gain research experience at one of NHERI’s eleven multi-hazard engineering and interdisciplinary facilities. Students conduct hands-on research in topics like field reconnaissance, wind engineering, earthquake engineering, cyberinfrastructure and data management, natural hazards modeling and simulation, and social science disaster research.

Applications for the 2025 NHERI REU program will be online in October 2024. Check the REU web page for updates.
