On August 9-10, capping off ten weeks of research, the 2021 cohort of NHERI REU students took part in the NHERI REU Research Symposium held at the University of Texas at San Antonio. UTSA serves as headquarters for NHERI’s education and outreach team. Twenty-seven of the twenty-eight REU students traveled to San Antonio, where they presented their research findings in person to peers and via Zoom to their facility mentors and families. One REU student presented her poster and presentation entirely through Zoom.

Presenting their research findings was a milestone experience for these high-achieving undergraduates. But the event was also a welcome opportunity for the NHERI REU students to meet in person and form lasting friendships. This face-to-face occasion was especially meaningful because most 2021 research experiences were virtual.

During the Symposium, students presented their PowerPoint presentations virtually through Zoom while an in-person audience, composed of UTSA’s civil and mechanical engineering and social science faculty, enjoyed the NHERI REU poster presentations in the UTSA Science and Engineering Building’s Makerspace.

NHERI REU students also had the chance to tour the Large-Scale Testing Laboratory at UTSA as well as spend some quality time together after hours.
