In the News: FIU Experts Discuss Outdated Building Codes Post Hurricane Michael

After Hurricane Michael, NBC Channel 6 reported on building code research underway at Florida International University’s Wall of Wind. Reporter Ari Odzer spoke with Lab Manager Walter Conklin, who explained that many of the homes damaged in Hurricane Michael were built before stronger building codes became state law in 2002. Compared to older homes, Conklin said, structures built according to the newer building codes fared much better during Irma and Hurricane Michael, both Category 4 storms. WATCH THE STORY.
